Smith said the country needs a “new president” but argued that unseating a sitting president is not the path forward.
“That ain’t going to happen,” Smith said on his podcast Straight Shooter Thursday. “As long as he is alive and breathing, he is going to be the president until the end of the year 2028. It’s just a fact. But that doesn’t mean we can’t aspire for some things.”
Nearly 80 Democrats in the House and Senate called on the Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment after Trump threatened to escalate the Iran war by targeting civilian infrastructure.
Before a ceasefire deal was made Tuesday night, Trump posted on TruthSocial, warning Iran if a deal wasn’t made by the deadline, a “whole civilization” would die.
The TruthSocial post drew backlash from both Democrats and Republicans, with calls to invoke the 25th Amendment.
Former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene echoed Democrats’ calls, saying Trump’s threats are “evil” and “madness.”
Smith, who has become more political in recent years, fueling speculation of a 2028 presidential run, slammed Greene and other politicians, calling them “bloviating.”
“Unlike Marjorie Taylor Greene and a bunch of people on the right,” Smith said. “Talking out of both sides of their mouth, knowing that they’re pushing for something that will never happen, meaning invoking the 25th Amendment.”
Smith argued that it is unrealistic for the 25th Amendment to be invoked, as it will take a lot of the president’s allies turning on him.
“All you’re showing is how useless you are [about those calling to unseat Trump],” Smith said. “To invoke the 25th Amendment, you’re going to have to get the vice president to sign off, the Republicans in the House to sign off, Cabinet members to sign off, basically declaring him unfit.”
“There is a reason why it’s never been exercised in American history. Stop it,” he added.
Smith emphasized that his remarks about needing a new president differed from those calling for the 25th Amendment to be invoked since he is “expressing an opinion.”
“I’m saying we need a new president, because he doesn’t know how to act, period. What they’re doing is exercising infutility, I’m only expressing an opinion about how you should feel about him at this moment in time,” he said. “They’re acting like they can do something about it when they know damn well they can’t.”
Despite disagreeing with calls to unseat Trump, Smith said Trump is “a problem.”
“This man is a problem,” Smith said. “Because he seems more concerned about leading himself than the American people.”

Smith reiterated that he is a “centrist,” who leads right fiscally and left with “practically” everything else.
“I’m not a fan of MAGA on the extreme Right, and I’m damn sure ain’t a fan of the progressives, which is the extreme left,” he said. “I’m of the Bill Clinton variety. I’m of the Barack Obama variety … I’m a Sen. John McCain kind of Republican.”
“I like people who talk about the issues and leave themselves open to being persuaded to some degree because I believe the absence of that leads to what we have, absolute chaos, and who is a bigger instigator of that than Donald J. Trump,” he added.
