Commentator Tucker Carlson said he feels sorry “as I do for all slaves” for President Donald Trump as the war in Iran continues.

Trump targeted Carlson and other prominent commentators who used to support the president but have grown critical of the United States’s involvement in the Iran war, saying they are “low IQ.” Carlson, a critic of the Israeli government, said Trump “fell” for Israel’s demand for regime change of Iran, and added the president recognizes “immediately” that this was a mistake.

Carlson promoted and campaigned for Trump ahead of the 2024 election against former Vice President Kamala Harris, and held a live interview with Trump in Glendale, Arizona, five days before the election. BBC anchor Laura Kuenssberg said Carlson used to be “a huge supporter” of Trump, and asked if he’s “completely fallen out” with the president over the Iran war.

“Well, I haven’t fallen out with him, I’ve known him for decades, I’ve always liked him,” Carlson said in a BBC interview that aired Sunday. “I think anyone who spends time with him likes him. I feel sorry for him, as I do for all slaves; he is not free in this moment at all to do what he thinks is best for himself for his country.”

Kuenssberg said, “Of course he’s [Trump] free,” and asked what Carlson meant. Carlson said Trump announced a ceasefire with Iran on Tuesday, and the ceasefire ended “within two hours” when Israel “intentionally” violated the terms by striking Lebanon.

Israel focused its attention on Hezbollah in Lebanon after a two-week ceasefire was reached between the U.S. and Iran, sparking outrage from the latter country’s capital, Tehran, as it claimed a ceasefire in Lebanon was part of the agreement. However, Trump has publicly backed Israel in its claim that Lebanon wasn’t part of the ceasefire agreement.

Carlson also said it’s not “as simple” to claim Trump is under Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s control, although he said one could summarize it this way and “you wouldn’t be totally inaccurate.”

Other commentators Trump has fired off on include Infowars creator Alex Jones, journalist Megyn Kelly, and commentator Candace Owens. Trump described these people, including Carlson, as “losers” who are “just trying to latch on to MAGA.”

Carlson responded to Trump’s statement by selling “Low IQ” merchandise, including hats bearing this nickname.
