Former President Donald Trump responded to his former vice president’s refusal to endorse him on Tuesday, claiming the country does not need “weak people.”
Trump took his dismissive view of Mike Pence as he narrows down his list of possible running mates in 2024.
“I couldn’t care less,” Trump said of Pence’s lack of support as he voted in the Florida primary, per the Hill. “We need patriots. We need strong people in our country. Our country is going downhill very fast, very rapidly. We need strong people in this country. We don’t need weak people.”
Pence said he could not endorse Trump on Friday and accused his former boss of going against the conservative policies that the pair had championed for four years.
“It should come as no surprise that I will not be endorsing Donald Trump this year,” Pence told Fox News’s Martha MacCallum. “During my presidential campaign, I made it clear there were profound differences between me and President Trump on a range of issues, and not just our differences on our constitutional duties that I exercised on Jan. 6. Donald Trump is pursuing and articulating an agenda that is at odds with the conservative agenda that we governed on during our four years.”
Pence claimed some of the topics he separated from Trump on were the former president’s stance on the national debt, his opinion on a federal TikTok ban, and his refusal to make a strong stance on abortion.

The former vice president had been a strong supporter of Trump during their administration but reversed course after the events of Jan. 6, 2021. He even launched a 2024 presidential campaign but suspended it in October.
While not supporting Trump, Pence vowed he would not vote for President Joe Biden.
