The Georgia state Senate approved the creation of an investigative committee to scrutinize the conduct of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.

The state Senate voted 30-19 on Friday to investigate Willis following allegations that she engaged in an improper relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade while he continues to lead the prosecution in the election subversion case against former President Donald Trump.

The legislation to create a Senate Special Committee on Investigations was introduced by state Sen. Greg Dolezal on Monday. The committee will have the power to issue subpoenas and compel the production of records involving Willis and the allegations.

“I am deeply troubled by the poor judgment of our D.A., Fani Willis,” Republican state Sen. Brandon Beach said during debates Friday via the Telegraph. “I believe this scheme … was a fraud against the court and a fraud against the taxpayer.”

A Georgia judge unsealed divorce proceedings related to Wade on Monday. Willis’s deposition in the divorce case will now be delayed until after Wade is deposed on Jan. 31.

Willis has claimed in court filings that the deposition would be “outside the scope of discovery” in the divorce matter and that it amounts to an “attempt to harass and damage her professional reputation.”

A recently leaked court filing revealed Wade’s credit card transactions, which show he and Willis went on a Royal Caribbean cruise together in October 2022 and that he paid for at least two of her flights.

Fulton County Commissioner Bob Ellis, the chairman of the county’s audit committee, sent a letter to Willis on Jan. 19 asking whether she engaged in a “romantic relationship” with Wade, “misused” county funds, and “accepted valuable gifts and personal benefits from a contractor/recipient of County funds.” Willis has until Feb. 2 to provide her response.

Democrats accused Republicans of spending time on “bedroom politics” while debating the committee resolution, according to the Messenger.

“All we’ve heard is allegations, and most of it comes from an ex-wife who’s mad and wants to get some money,” Democratic state Sen. David Lucas said during the debate. “We have a system. Let it play out.”
