Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND) suggested that independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. be able to attend the presidential debates, as it would provide an opportunity to “expose” the candidate’s position on several topics facing voters.
President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, the presumptive nominee for the Republican Party, have both agreed to debate each other in a CNN debate on June 27. Kennedy’s campaign insisted that the independent candidate be able to partake in this debate, even though an independent candidate has not participated in a presidential debate since Ross Perot in 1992.
“Well, I think President Trump has said if he qualifies, he should be on,” Burgum said when asked about Kennedy on the debate stage during an appearance on Fox News’s Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo. “But it’ll be a great opportunity to expose him as the Green New Deal spending, liberal Democrat that he is, and President Trump versus two Democrats, I think American people would enjoy watching that.”
Trump has increased his criticism of Kennedy ahead of the presidential election, claiming that the independent candidate is not as big of a critic of vaccinations as he portrays himself to be. It comes as Kennedy could potentially be a spoiler candidate for either the former president or Biden.
Burgum also addressed Biden’s leadership ahead of the debates, saying that the nation as a whole is concerned about Biden’s “capacity” to perform his duties as president, not just during the debate.
Burgum is rumored to be one of several candidates that Trump is considering as a potential candidate for vice president. The North Dakota governor has attended Trump’s legal trial in Manhattan, calling it “election interference.”

Other people rumored to be on Trump’s consideration include Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), Byron Donalds (R-FL), and Sens. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and J.D. Vance (R-OH).
Vice President Kamala Harris has accepted an invitation from CBS News to debate Trump’s running mate, with the debate scheduled for either July 23 or Aug. 13. Like the presidential debate, this debate would be conducted in studio without a live audience.
