Three Israelis were killed by a gunman who opened fire at a border crossing between Israel and Jordan.

The shooting occurred at the Allenby Bridge, the main border crossing between Jordan and the Israeli-controlled West Bank. The shooter arrived in a truck and shot three Israelis with a handgun before being killed by Israeli security forces, according to the Israel Defense Forces. The three Israelis were identified as civilians.

The truck was inspected for explosives.

The incident is a rarity between Israel and Jordan, which enjoy generally good relations. After fighting four wars, the two signed a peace treaty in 1994, and have since developed some of the closest ties between the Jewish state and an Arab state.

Relations have been strained by the war in Gaza, particularly as Jordan hosts a large Palestinian population. Despite this, Sunday marks the first major violent incident between the two.

The incident is still under investigation, and the attacker hasn’t yet been identified.

Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad praised the attack, the Wall Street Journal reported, but didn’t claim credit.

Jordan is the home of a U.S. base that was struck by a drone from an Iranian-backed militia in January, killing three U.S. soldiers.
