Former Hawaii Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard said it is not “a leap of imagination” to think that former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is leading the United States, not President Joe Biden.

Gabbard, once a Democratic presidential candidate in the 2020 election, explained in a new interview that both Clinton and former President Barack Obama still wield “immense power” in the sphere of U.S. politics. Tucker Carlson, who was conducting the interview, asked if she was answering the question some viewers had if Clinton, not Biden, is running the U.S. government.

“It’s not a leap of imagination to know that that’s true when you look at the people who are in Joe Biden’s administration,” Gabbard said on Carlson’s show on X. “They are the people who were the right hands for the Obama administration, for President Obama and for Hillary Clinton. When Hillary Clinton said herself the other day, she said, ‘Oh yeah, I talk to the White House every day!’”

Gabbard left the Democratic Party in October 2022, explaining in a video posted to social media that the party only protects the “powerful elite.” In reflecting on her departure from the party, Gabbard explained that her decision did not stem from “one specific thing” but noted how she had ultimately not succeeded in returning the party back to its roots as a party of the people.

The former Democrat also discussed how she received major pushback within her own party when she voiced her support for then-presidential candidate Bernie Sanders over Clinton in the 2016 Democratic primary. The endorsement prompted some of her Democratic colleagues “basically” to draft her political eulogies, and she was told her district would not receive “a single dime.”

Gabbard is one of several people rumored to be on former President Donald Trump’s short list for his vice presidential candidate. While Gabbard has remained politically homeless since leaving the Democratic Party in 2022, she has voiced her criticism of the party many times, even speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference in February.

Other candidates rumored to be on Trump’s vice president short list are Reps. Byron Donalds (R-FL) and Elise Stefanik (R-NY) and Govs. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and and Kristi Noem (R-SD).

Carlson himself was rumored to be on this short list, though he has rejected this possibility. He explained that while he was not intimidated by the role of vice president, he did not see how he could be truly effective in such a position.
