The head of the House Republican Conference said the party will forge a “blueprint” for a massive reconciliation bill over a multiday retreat this week, stressing how impactful it will be if lawmakers “get this bill right.”
The retreat will take place at Trump National Doral Miami golf resort in Florida over the next three days. There, party leaders will discuss the massive bill that President Donald Trump has envisioned for the nation. Chairwoman Lisa McClain (R-MI) acknowledged how Republicans currently lack unity within the House, which is also hampered due to the party’s slim majority, but suggested they are “pretty close” to uniting the party behind what should be included in the bill.
“And I think we have to get this bill right because if we get this bill right, we can truly change the trajectory of this country for the next 15 to 20 years,” McClain said on Fox Business’s Mornings with Maria Bartiromo. “So it’s important that we slow down a little bit, that we get it right because it does matter.”
McClain added that this meeting would allow House Republicans to “get down to the nitty gritty” and leave the retreat with a blueprint of what Republicans and the people they represent want from this bill. “The tough part” of this bill, McClain detailed, is forming it to achieve its purpose, which she expressed confidence is possible.
One topic the bill needs to address is overspending within the nation, which McClain said is “clearly” evident and requires “unconventional thinking” to solve. She stressed that addressing this can provide the long-term change the bill needs to provide.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), one of several high-profile Republican lawmakers attending the retreat, assured ahead of these meetings that dialogue on achieving the House Republicans’ goals is “going very well.” Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL) also said Trump, who will join the Republicans on the retreat, would be “a strong head coach” for the lawmakers to follow as they forge their blueprint.
Meanwhile, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) assured that Republicans will deliver results regardless of the size of their majority, in which the party only has a narrow lead. He also cited how congressional Republicans are “in sync” with the president, unlike when Trump was in office back in 2017.
