Rep. Mike McCaul (R-TX) warned against ousting House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), saying that such a move could favor Democrats.
Last week, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) moved to vacate Johnson. In an appearance on CBS News’s Face the Nation on Sunday, McCaul said the move would hurt Republicans.
“You know, I think it’s indicative that even [Rep.] Matt Gaetz (R-FL), who was the architect of ousting McCarthy, to say, ‘this would be a huge mistake,’ because it could actually throw the balance of power over to [House minority leader] Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY),” the Texas Republican said.
“I think that’s one argument,” he continued. “The other argument is we don’t need dysfunction right now. With the world on fire the way it is … we need to govern. And that is not just for Republicans, but in a bipartisan way. Get things done for the country that’s in the national security interest of the United States. This is not just Ukraine; it’s Israel and Indo-Pacific as well.”
In a rare move, Gaetz split with his fellow firebrand ally, Greene, saying he would not vote to vacate the speakership.

“I’m not going to question her decision. I’m just not ready to support a motion to vacate,” he said of Greene.
Greene’s other major ally, Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN), also expressed his opposition to the move.
