As the summer season quickly approaches, now is the time to fill the backyard pool, uncover the grill, and change the direction that the ceiling fans are moving.

That’s right. The direction in which your ceiling fans move changes with the seasons. In the summer, ceiling fan blades should spin counterclockwise, and they should spin clockwise in the winter.

Not only do ceiling fans help play a part in keeping your home at a comfortable temperature during any season, but they also cut the costs of electric bills.

Why does the direction of the spin matter?

In the summer months, it’s important to set your ceiling fan counterclockwise. When spinning in this direction, the fan pushes air down and creates a cool breeze, helping the room’s temperature stay consistent and also reducing the need for an air conditioner to be running constantly. This can help save homeowners 47% on cooling costs, according to Hunter Fans.

It might seem strange to run a ceiling fan during the cold winter months, but it can actually help distribute the furnace heat. This allows homeowners to keep their thermostats at a lower temperature while maintaining a warm, cozy home. Utilizing the ceiling fan can reduce heating bills by as much as 15%. The clockwise motion of the blades at a low speed will push the warm air down from the ceiling.

It’s all about the angles

To maximize cooling, ceiling fan blades should be set to a minimum of 12 degrees. Any angle above 16 degrees risks the chance of blowing around loose objects.

How to change the direction of a ceiling fan

It’s simple. On the main body of the fan, there should be a switch that you can flip. Some newer models can change the fan’s direction with a remote or an app.
