Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD) has requested the South Dakota legislature to host a joint session with her so she can brief state lawmakers about the “war zone” taking place along the U.S. southern border.

Noem’s request for the session asked that it be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. CST. During the session, Noem aims to also explain potential ways South Dakota will respond to the border crisis.

“Thank you for your consideration,” Noem’s letter read. “I look forward to working with you to keep South Dakotans, Texans, and all Americans safe.”

The request by Noem comes after she said she would be willing to send the South Dakota National Guard to the Texas border. The governor said such a move would be to assist Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) as he feuds with the Biden administration over keeping illegal immigrants out of the country.

Noem also visited the southern border on Friday, taking part in a boat tour with the Texas National Guard and the Texas Department of Public Safety. Noem said whenever she visits the border, the situation “has deteriorated more and more.”

“Texas has carved out a small zone of security in the middle of this warzone,” Noem said in a statement. “Now, the Biden Administration is undermining them.”

Abbott has opted not to heed the Biden administration after a Supreme Court decision gave Border Patrol agents permission to slash state-installed razor wire at the border. The Texas governor argued that Texas has a “constitutional right to self-defense.”

Noem is one of at least 25 Republican governors who have addressed a letter in support of Texas and Abbott’s course of action, with other governors including Brian Kemp (R-GA), Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R-AR), and Glenn Youngkin (R-VA).
