Braun, the Hoosier State’s junior senator, won a six-way GOP primary in the race to succeed Gov. Eric Holcomb (R-IN). He was endorsed by former President Donald Trump and was thought to be in good position in the right-leaning state.

McCormick, a former superintendent of public instruction, was the only Democratic candidate in the primary, and the state hadn’t elected a Democrat to any statewide office in 12 years.

Braun has spent more than 10 years in public office, beginning with his local school board before moving on to become a state legislator and then a senator. He ran an auto parts business before that, a history he has leaned on in his campaigns.

On Capitol Hill, Braun was known as a fiscal hawk and a member of the “Breakfast Club,” an unofficial group of senators who consistently buck Senate GOP leadership.
