Israeli and Egyptian troops exchanged gunfire on Monday at the Rafah border crossing, reportedly resulting in the death of one Egyptian.

Israeli media reported that a firefight occurred at the key crossing. The Israel Defense Forces said the government has been in contact with Egypt over what it described as “a shooting incident.”

“A few hours ago there was a shooting incident on the Egyptian border, the [incident] is under investigation, dialogue is taking place with the Egyptian side,” the IDF said.

Egypt said that one of its soldiers was killed in the exchange. Egyptian military spokesman Gharib Abdel Hafez said on social media that one person was killed and Egypt is now investigating the incident.

No Israeli soldiers were wounded in the incident, according to the Jerusalem Post.

The exchange of gunfire comes just hours after dozens were reportedly killed in Rafah when Israel conducted an airstrike it said was targeting Hamas terrorists. Gazan authorities said that at least 45 were killed after the airstrike hit a tent encampment for displaced people.

“The strike was carried out against legitimate targets under international law, using precise munitions and on the basis of precise intelligence that indicated Hamas’ use of the area,” the IDF statement read.

Israel said it is investigating the situation.
