Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) warned Sunday that a potential second term of President Joe Biden would cause “generational” damage to the United States.

Biden is seeking reelection this year while former President Donald Trump is also running for president again, meaning a rematch between the two is likely. Rubio, who endorsed Trump in January, stressed why he believes Biden cannot be allowed to win another four years in office, as some of the “damage” it would cause would be “irreversible.”

“Here’s what I do know: if Joe Biden is reelected president, the damage to this country, I believe, in some cases will be generational, and some of it will be irreversible,” Rubio said. “That’s how high the stakes are. I cannot imagine another four years under Joe Biden as president.”

Rubio added that he would do whatever he could to get Trump back into the White House, as the U.S. “can’t afford” another term of the Biden presidency.

The Florida senator is rumored to be on Trump’s short list for vice presidential candidates, though Rubio stated Sunday that he has not spoken to Trump or anyone in his campaign on the matter. When asked if he would like to work as Trump’s vice president, he said he would do “whatever the campaign asks me to do.”

Rubio was also asked about the topic of abortion, which is likely to play a major factor for voters this year due to it being the first presidential election year since Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022. The senator argued there could be disagreement on the topic even among those who oppose abortion, though he reiterated that he supports “any bill that protects unborn life.”

Besides Rubio, other people who are rumored to be on Trump’s vice presidential shortlist include Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), Reps. Byron Donalds (R-FL), Elise Stefanik (R-NY), and Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH).
