Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) admitted that President Joe Biden isn’t popular among voters but expressed his opinion that supporting him against former President Donald Trump is necessary.
In an op-ed for the Guardian, Sanders shared his frustrations with the U.S. political system while calling 2024 a critical moment in American history, on par with the Civil War, the Great Depression, and the attack on Pearl Harbor. The key to taking the correct course during this critical moment, according to the senator, is to support Biden in November despite his problems.
“Yes. I know. Biden is not popular and many progressives, including me, strongly disagree with his policies regarding Israel and this disastrous war in Gaza,” Sanders wrote.
“But, let’s be clear. Biden is not running against God,” he continued. “He is running against Donald Trump, the most dangerous president in American history whose second term, if he is re-elected, will be worse than his first. And, on his worst day, Biden is a thousand times better than Trump.”
Sanders proceeded to contrast the two on wealth inequality, abortion, unions, climate change, student debt, democracy, and the war in Gaza. He offered limited praise for Biden’s stance on the war.
“And if you have problems with Biden’s position on Israel and the war in Gaza, Trump’s position is far worse,” Sanders said. “Biden has at least restricted some powerful bombs from going to Israel and has been critical of Netanyahu. Trump and his Republican colleagues are ‘all in’ for the massive destruction of the Palestinian people.”

Though Biden vowed to pause the shipment of certain weapons to Israel, specifically large bombs, he clarified that Israel hasn’t yet crossed a red line that would necessitate the move. In the meantime, the administration announced its approval of a $1 billion weapon shipment to Israel, consisting of $700 million in tank ammunition, $500 million in tactical vehicles, and $60 million in mortar rounds.
Sanders has been an open supporter of Biden since losing to him in the 2020 Democratic primary despite objections to many of his policies.
