The Biden administration reiterated its observance of the Transgender Day of Visibility on Sunday, despite criticism from Republicans about the day falling on Easter Sunday.
Multiple members of Biden’s White House, including himself, recognized the holiday through posts on social media. Biden announced on Friday that Sunday would be recognized as Transgender Day of Visibility, a day of observance that has occurred since 2009 on March 31 each year.
This year, however, Easter Sunday also fell on March 31, prompting an outcry from Republicans that Biden was “canceling” the religious holiday.
“The Biden White House has betrayed the central tenet of Easter — which is the resurrection of Jesus Christ,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said on X. “Banning sacred truth and tradition—while at the same time proclaiming Easter Sunday as “Transgender Day”—is outrageous and abhorrent. The American people are taking note.”
Despite the backlash, Biden and other members of his administration moved forward with embracing the holiday.
“On Transgender Day of Visibility, we celebrate the joy, strength, and absolute courage of some of the bravest people I know,” Biden posted on X on Sunday. “Today, we show millions of transgender and nonbinary Americans that we see them, they belong, and they should be treated with dignity and respect.”
Before he posted for Transgender Day of Visibility, the president also wished those celebrating a “Happy Easter.”
“To all those gathering in churches and homes around the world today: Happy Easter,” Biden posted on X Sunday. “May God bless and keep you.”
Vice President Kamala Harris, as well as Secretaries Anthony Blinkin, Xavier Becerra, and Deb Haaland, also voiced support.
“On Transgender Day of Visibility, we celebrate transgender and nonbinary Americans. Their courage has given countless others strength, but no one should have to be brave just to be themselves,” Harris said on X. “We see you. We stand with you. We won’t stop fighting for you.”
Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg has not yet posted for Transgender Day of Visibility like other Cabinet members, only posting for Easter Sunday.

The White House defended its position to issue a proclamation in support of the day, which they have done since 2021.
“As a Christian who celebrates Easter with family, President Biden stands for bringing people together and upholding the dignity and freedoms of every American.” Andrew Bates, White House spokesman, said. “Sadly, it’s unsurprising politicians are seeking to divide and weaken our country with cruel, hateful, and dishonest rhetoric. President Biden will never abuse his faith for political purposes or for profit.”
