The worse the humanitarian crisis in Gaza gets, the harder it will be to repair relations among Democrats, Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) has warned.

The House Democrat’s message comes as the United States is sending a new round of bombs to Israel in its military campaign to defeat Hamas, according to NBC News. President Joe Biden has demanded the need for a ceasefire in Gaza in order for more aid to reach Palestinians, but the president’s critics see his military support of Israel as directly contradicting those declarations.

“This particular issue on Gaza is breaking our coalition,” Jayapal told CNN’s Manu Raju. “We need that fragile coalition to come back together, but this is a moral issue for people. So there’s not a lot of time to fix it. The worse it gets in Gaza, the harder it gets to bring people back in.”

Jayapal is the chairwoman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) are also members of the body, and they have been steadfast in their position that the Biden administration needs to do more to stop Israel’s military campaign that has killed more than 30,000 Palestinians, according to the enclave’s health ministry, which is run by Hamas.

Biden’s refusal to halt shipments of military support to Israel could present a significant problem to his reelection effort, especially if the “uncommitted” campaigns levied against him during several primaries carry over to the general election.

Jayapal signaled that Biden faces a real concern this November as Democrats remain on opposing sides over how to respond to Israel amid worsening conditions in Gaza.
