Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) criticized Democrats who have spoken out against President Joe Biden, arguing that those who are “might as well just get your MAGA hat.”

The Pennsylvania senator’s comment comes as Biden is seeking reelection this November, with former President Donald Trump being his likely opponent. Ahead of the 2024 presidential election, multiple Democratic lawmakers and strategists have spoken out against Biden, citing recent policy decisions the president has made and concerns about his electability.

“I don’t understand why,” Fetterman said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe. “I don’t know what’s in it for you to do that, whether you’re just chasing clout or you want to make it in the news or anything like that. But if you’re not willing to just support the president now and say these kinds of things, you might as well just get your MAGA hat because you now are helping Trump with this.”

Fetterman also warned about how important his state is for the Democratic Party to win in the 2024 election, claiming that whoever wins the state will go on to win the election. The senator’s statement comes as some polls have shown Trump beating Biden in multiple swing states, including Pennsylvania.

Fetterman said he supports Biden, claiming the current president is the only one who could beat Trump if the former president is the Republican Party’s 2024 nominee.

Fetterman’s warning against Democrats criticizing Biden comes several months after the terrorist group Hamas attacked Israel. The president has worked to provide aid for Israel in the wake of the attack, creating division among some prominent Democrats. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) encouraged Democrats not to vote for Biden in the Michigan presidential primary as a form of protest in response to his handling of the war in Gaza.

Democratic lawmakers are not the only ones expressing criticism of Biden ahead of the 2024 election. Political strategist David Axelrod questioned in November 2023 if Biden seeking reelection was in the best interest of the country. James Carville, another Democratic strategist, also criticized Biden for skipping an interview before the Super Bowl this month, arguing that not doing the interview showed a lack of confidence in Biden’s ability to perform.

Trump, who is leading the Republican Party’s 2024 presidential primary, will be speaking at this year’s Conservative Political Action Conference on Saturday, the same day as the South Carolina GOP primary. Trump’s only remaining opponent in the primary, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, previously served as governor in the state.
