Several Republicans have called out President Joe Biden for his proclamation of Transgender Day of Visibility on March 31 — the same day as Easter this year.

The proclamation, released by the White House on Friday, called on citizens to “join us in lifting up the lives and voices of transgender people throughout our Nation” on the holiest day of the year for Christians.

“Today, we send a message to all transgender Americans:” Biden said in his proclamation. “You are loved. You are heard. You are understood. You belong. You are America, and my entire Administration and I have your back.”

Biden, a Catholic, has previously declared Transgender Day of Visibility on March 31 in 2021, 2022, and 2023, but with Easter occurring that day in 2024, several online personalities and politicians slammed Biden for his proclamation.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) claimed on Saturday that Biden had “betrayed the central tenet of Easter,” with his proclamation.

“The Biden White House has betrayed the central tenet of Easter — which is the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Banning sacred truth and tradition—while at the same time proclaiming Easter Sunday as “Transgender Day”—is outrageous and abhorrent. The American people are taking note,” Johnson said in a post on X, while also noting a report alleging the White House has banned religious designs from an Easter egg contest.

Former President Donald Trump’s campaign also took aim at Biden, calling the pair of actions “appalling and insulting.”

“It is appalling and insulting that Joe Biden’s White House prohibited children from submitting religious egg designs for their Easter Art Event, and formally proclaimed Easter Sunday as ‘Trans Day of Visibility,’” Trump campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. “Sadly, these are just two more examples of the Biden Administration’s years-long assault on the Christian faith.

“We call on Joe Biden’s failing campaign and White House to issue an apology to the millions of Catholics and Christians across America who believe tomorrow is for one celebration only — the resurrection of Jesus Christ,” she added.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) said in a post on X on Saturday that “the only thing to declare on Easter Sunday is Alleluia, He Is Risen.”

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), the House Republican conference chairwoman, called Biden’s proclamation disgraceful.

“Joe Biden declares that Easter Sunday is transgender visibility day while he bans Christian symbols from the White House Easter egg roll,” Stefanik said in a post on X. “Disgraceful. Easter will forever be the celebration of Jesus Christ’s resurrection.”

Biden has issued statements on Easter each year of his presidency and is expected to do so on Sunday. He will host the annual White House Easter Egg Roll on Monday.
