Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) suggested it wouldn’t be the worst move for President Joe Biden to take a cognitive test in the fallout of his lackluster presidential debate performance.

In the wake of Biden’s debate performance, Democrats have struggled to come to a consensus on Biden’s political future, with some rank-and-file House Democrats suggesting he should drop out with relatively few big names calling for the same. Some have called for Biden to take a cognitive test to ensure voters he’s up for the job, a move Whitmer said wouldn’t hurt the President.

“I don’t think that it would hurt,” Whitmer said after CNN’s Abby Phillip asked her if both Biden and former President Donald Trump should take a cognitive test.

“[Biden] shows up every day and fights for the American public. He cares about other people more than he cares about himself, and that’s precisely why I think this moment where we have Donald Trump, who’s been convicted of 34 felonies, who cares only about Donald Trump, we can’t lose sight of how high these stakes are,” Whitmer said.

“We have a field, and unless one person, Joe Biden, makes an alternative decision, this is the field, and we’ve got to go,” She continued.

When Biden was asked by ABC’s George Stephanopoulos last week if a cognitive test was in the cards, Biden said he gets “a full neurological test every day,” as president.

“No one said I had to [take a test]. They said I’m good,” Biden said.

Whitmer’s name has been floated in Democratic circles as a viable replacement for Biden at the top of the ticket. She has repeatedly put those rumors to bed.

“I understand that some are playing fantasy football and want to just pick a couple of random leaders that they like across the country and design a ticket. That’s just not how this works. We have a president who’s gotten a nomination, who’s earned it,” Whitmer said on CNN Wednesday.

She also previously said she doesn’t like seeing her name in the news about her becoming Biden’s replacement as it “distracts” from real issues.

“It’s a distraction more than anything,” she said. “I don’t like seeing my name in articles like that because I’m totally focused on governing and campaigning for the ticket.”
