John Kerry is reportedly leaving his post as the special presidential envoy for climate to help with the Biden reelection campaign.

Kerry, the former secretary of state and Democratic nominee for president in 2004, says serving on President Joe Biden‘s campaign and helping him get reelected is the “single biggest” action that can be made this year for climate progress at home and globally.

A source close to the Biden administration told Axios that Kerry, 80, plans to leave his current post within the State Department to tout Biden’s climate accomplishments and highlight the actions still necessary in the incumbent’s possible second term.

On Wednesday, Kerry reportedly met with Biden in the Oval Office to discuss Biden’s record on climate, including the COP28 climate summit last month in Dubai.

Since his appointment to the role in 2021, Kerry has had a leading hand in U.S.-China relations with respect to climate, arguing that no climate solution can be effective without the participation of the top two emitters.

Kerry and his Chinese counterpart, Xie Zhenhua, have had good relations, announcing two bilateral climate deals in 2021 and 2023, respectively.

Xie, who was brought out of retirement when Kerry was appointed, recently announced his second departure from public life, causing some to question Kerry’s future in the Biden administration.
