Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) wants to see a debate between President Joe Biden and his likely opponent in the 2024 general election, Donald Trump.
Newsom appeared on Meet the Press on Sunday, where host Kristen Welker asked the California governor whether Biden should debate Trump after the former president expressed his desire to do so.
“Biden beat Trump in the prior debates; I look forward to it,” Newsom said, referring to debates ahead of the 2020 election.
“So that’s a yes?” Welker asked.
“100%,” Newsom replied before targeting Trump. “Pure projection on a guy who refused to debate in his own primary. Back to my point: weakness masquerading as strength.”
Trump has not debated any of his Republican opponents in the primary. He qualified for the RNC’s rules requiring certain polling figures to make the stage, but he would not agree to sign a pledge to support the eventual Republican nominee should he lose the primary.

Meanwhile, Biden also has a challenge for the Democratic nomination. Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) remains in the race despite the fact that Biden most recently won Nevada with 89.3%.
Biden has shown no indication that he plans to debate Phillips.
