Former President Barack Obama’s onetime speechwriter claimed that reports that President Joe Biden is angry over Israel’s airstrike that killed seven aid workers “only make him look weak.”
Jon Favreau said Biden does not deserve credit for being “privately enraged” over the killing of the aid workers because he has not used his position to “leverage” change from the Israeli government to stop its military campaign in Gaza. Biden has received much backlash over his response to the Israel-Hamas war.
“The President doesn’t get credit for being ‘privately enraged’ when he still refuses to use leverage to stop the IDF from killing and starving innocent people,” Favreau posted to X on Wednesday. “These stories only make him look weak.”
Favreau was responding to a report from Politico, citing senior officials, that said Biden will not change any of his Israeli policies. One source reportedly said the refusal of the U.S. government to draw a line with the Israeli government is “regrettable.”
The Israeli airstrike killed seven humanitarian aid workers with the World Central Kitchen on Monday, including a U.S.-Canadian citizen. Israel claimed that it accidentally killed the workers and said it is reviewing its reports to avoid making the same mistake in the future.
White House spokesman John Kirby said thousands of civilians have been killed in Gaza so far, including more than 200 aid workers.
Republicans have blasted Biden over the president’s anger at Israel, rather than Hamas, which started the war in October.
“How about Biden being outraged over the American and Israeli hostages being brutalized by the Hamas savages and remembering that Hamas is the cause of all of this tragedy,” Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-WI) posted to X. “Biden has abandoned Israel. I have not.”

Biden has called out Hamas and supported Israel in the aftermath of the terrorist group’s fall massacre, but his support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has waned as Palestinian civilians continue to die.
Biden’s handling of the Israel war has even earned him pushback at the polls. Tens of thousands of Democratic voters opted to vote “uncommitted” or “uninstructed” in several Democratic primaries on Tuesday night. Biden still won all of the primaries.
