CHICAGO — The opening night of the 2024 Democratic National Convention saw remarks from President Joe Biden, a surprise, an early appearance from Vice President Kamala Harris, and a scrum of pro-Gaza protesters breaking through the security perimeter outside of the United Center.

How can Tuesday possibly top that? A prime-time speech from former President Barack Obama.

Obama will headline the second night of the DNC, which the party says will outline Democrats’ “Bold Vision for America’s Future.” Former first lady Michelle Obama and second gentleman Doug Emhoff will also deliver remarks Tuesday.

“This race isn’t just a choice between two candidates. It’s a choice between two very different visions of America. While Donald Trump believes our best days are behind us, Kamala Harris and Tim Walz know the best days lie ahead,” DNC officials said in a statement. “Standing in stark contrast to the Trump-Vance Project 2025 agenda designed to take us backwards, the Harris-Walz ticket presents a brighter vision where everyone will have a chance not just to get by, but to get ahead.”

Tuesday will also feature a ceremonial roll call, in which each delegation will deliver short remarks explaining their decision to back Harris after Biden withdrew from the 2024 race.

And as on Monday, the Democratic National Committee will hold a morning press conference and a host of caucus and council meetings throughout the day. The Republican National Committee and the Trump campaign will hold a competing press conference outside of Trump Tower on the Miracle Mile.

Harris herself has a busy day. She and her running mate, Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN), will fly to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to hold a campaign rally before returning to Chicago for the evening’s programming.

Tuesday does not have any permitted pro-Gaza protests on the schedule, but based on the turnout so far, it is safe to bet there will be demonstrations outside the United Center.
