A Reuters safety adviser was killed and two journalists were injured after a Russian missile struck a hotel in eastern Ukraine.

Ryan Evans, a former British soldier, was staying at the Hotel Sapphire in Kramatorsk as part of a six-person team when a Russian Iskander missile struck the hotel on Saturday night, reducing it to “rubble,” according to the Associated Press. His body was found Sunday under the rubble after debris had been cleared by excavators.

Two journalists were injured, with one being treated for serious injuries.

Evans had been working for Reuters since 2022 and advised its journalists on safety in Ukraine, Israel, and at the Paris Olympics.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the strike on Sunday and confirmed that both British and U.S. citizens were in the hotel at the time of the strike.

“My condolences go out to the family and friends. This is a daily Russian terror that continues because Russia has the ability to continue,” he said.

The U.S. State Department also confirmed that one U.S. citizen was injured but did not identify the person.

Kramatorsk is a city in the Donetsk region of Ukraine with a population of about 150,000. Early on in the war in Ukraine, in April 2022, a Russian missile struck a train station there, killing more than 50 people and injuring over 100.
