It was a “miracle on 34th Street” that no one was seriously injured after a taxi crashed into a crowd of people outside a famous Macy’s department store in New York City on Wednesday. The accident reportedly occurred shortly after 4 p.m. on Christmas Day.
Seven people were hurt in the crash, including a 9-year-old boy and his 41-year-old mother, according to reports. Two 49-year-old women, a 19-year-old woman, a 37-year-old woman, and the driver of the taxi, a 58-year-old man, were all injured.
Three people were hospitalized for further evaluation, and the others were treated at the scene after the incident. New York City Police Department reported that all injuries were considered non-life-threatening, according to ABC 7 Eyewitness News.
A man from Oregon visiting New York City for the holidays, whose wife was struck by the wayward cab, described the events to a local ABC affiliate.
“I ran over and noticed there was a little boy, his leg was underneath the front passenger tire as it was spinning,” the victim’s husband told ABC 7 Eyewitness News. “And then there was a group of people. One gentleman went over shut the car off, got into it shut it off. There was a whole group of us that ripped the fender off, lifted the car back, and then that’s when I grabbed the little boy, got him to the corner, realized that what ended up being his mom underneath.”
An official reason for the accident has yet to be provided. However, it is speculated that the cab driver experienced some medical emergency, which caused him to veer off the street and into the crowd.

The incident occurred at the famous Macy’s flagship store on West 34th Street and Sixth Avenue in Manhattan. In addition to its well-known elegant and elaborate decorative Christmas display, the store was also the setting for many scenes in the 1947 holiday classic, Miracle on 34th Street.
The incident in New York City comes just days after an attack at a Christmas market. On Dec. 20, a Saudi doctor drove his S.U.V into a crowd of people at a market in Magdeburg, Germany, leaving five people killed and over 200 injured.
