Forte, a small business owner, ran against Ocasio-Cortez on key issues that topped voters’ concerns throughout the 2024 cycle such as immigration, crime, and inflation. However, she was unable to sway voters to support her bid, marking her second defeat to the Democrat after previously losing to her in 2022.

In June, Ocasio-Cortez defeated her primary opponent, Marty Walsh, by a landslide. Walsh, a 66-year-old investment banker, was considered to be a centrist Democrat.

The New York Democrat’s House seat is in a reliably blue district that includes parts of Queens and the Bronx. Ocasio-Cortez has held the seat since being elected to the lower chamber in 2018 after defeating former longtime Rep. Joey Crowley in an upset primary win.

At the time, she was the youngest woman ever elected to Congress at age 29.

Ocasio-Cortez, a progressive Democrat and prominent member of the ‘Squad,’ became a frequent surrogate for Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign in the weeks leading up to Election Day, appearing alongside Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) on the streaming platform known as Twitch, as well as stumping for the campaign in Michigan.
