Former congresswoman and Democratic presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard said Tuesday that she was leaving the Democratic Party because it had become an “elitist cabal of warmongers driven by cowardly wokeness.”
Gabbard, who represented Hawaii’s second congressional district after serving two combat tours in the Middle East, made the announcement in a video posted to her social media accounts early Tuesday morning.

“I can no longer remain in today’s Democratic Party that is under the complete control of an elitist cabal of warmongers who are driven by cowardly wokeness, who divide us by racializing every issue and stoking anti-white racism, who actively work to undermine our God-given freedoms that are enshrined in our Constitution, who are hostile to people of faith and spirituality,” she said.
She also said that Democrats had “demonized police” to the benefit of criminals, promoted open borders, weaponized the national security agencies, and were pushing the U.S. towards a nuclear war.
“Now I believe in a government that’s of the people, by the people, and for the people. Unfortunately, today’s Democratic Party does not. Instead, it stands for a government that is of, by, and for the powerful elite,” she said.
Her video ended with her asking independent thinkers and others to join her in leaving the Democrat Party.
Gabbard, a frequent critic of the Biden administration, was a member of Congress from 2013-2021 and is an Army reserve officer. She has been critical of the administration’s stance toward the Russia-Ukraine war, the border, and the Department of Justice.
The former Democrat has also spoken out against the use of puberty blockers for children and blasted the Biden administration for supporting the use of said blockers.
“Now, if you haven’t heard about it, or, if you missed it, it is because the mainstream media and the Biden-Harris administration have been completely silent on it, and this warning that the FDA issued was basically saying that puberty blockers can cause serious health risks for our kids,” she said in July. “Unfortunately, at almost the exact same time the FDA issued this warning, Biden-Harris administration officials were making public statements actively promoting the use of puberty blockers and irreversible surgeries for kids.”
More recently, Gabbard took aim at Vice President Kamala Harris, saying that Harris “had no business” being next in line to the presidency because of how she had dealt with the crisis on the southern border.
“Kamala Harris’ statement that ‘we have a secure border’ is further evidence that she’s either completely disconnected from reality or she’s blatantly lying,” she said. “Either way, she has no business being a heartbeat away from the presidency.”
