The Biden administration is reportedly pushing federal law enforcement to exaggerate the threat from domestic terrorism and white supremacy as the White House uses such threats as political talking points.
Current and former members of the FBI say that President Joe Biden’s administration is pushing the bureau to devote more resources than necessary toward combatting domestic terrorism, especially with racial components, according to The Washington Times.
The FBI leadership’s “demand for [w]hite supremacy … vastly outstrips the supply of [w]hite supremacy,” one agent told the Times. “We have more people assigned to investigate [w]hite supremacists than we can actually find.”
The FBI brass has directed the bureau’s investigative efforts primarily toward domestic extremism cases, especially those with racial components, the agent said. The agent suggested that the push is so forceful that otherwise legal activities are sometimes swept up in the FBI’s scrutiny of certain actions for a potential extremist link.
“We are sort of the lapdogs as the actual agents doing these sorts of investigations, trying to find a crime to fit otherwise First Amendment-protected activities,” he said. “If they have a Gadsden flag and they own guns and they are mean at school board meetings, that’s probably a domestic terrorist.”
The FBI denied picking targets based on any other determination than dangerous or criminal activity.
“The FBI aggressively investigates threats posed by domestic violent extremists,” an FBI spokesperson told the Times. “We do not investigate ideology, and we do not investigate particular cases based on the political views of the individuals involved. The FBI will continue to pursue threats or acts of violence, regardless of the underlying motivation or sociopolitical goal.”
Biden emphasized the threat of “extremism” coming from “Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans” in a September 1 speech that he later walked back. Biden spoke in front of Philadelphia’s Independence Hall and claimed “MAGA Republicans” are an existential threat to the republic.
“There’s no question that the Republican Party today is dominated, driven, intimidated by Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans — and that is a threat to this country,” Biden said. “MAGA Republicans have made their choice. They embrace anger. They thrive on chaos. They live not in the light of truth, but in the shadow of lies. Together, we can choose a different path.”
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, said in July that FBI whistleblowers told his office of a similar phenomenon within the bureau. The bureau was “padding” its domestic terrorism cases to make the threat seem bigger than it is, Jordan said, based on whistleblower accounts.
“From recent protected disclosures, we have learned that FBI officials are pressuring agents to reclassify cases as ‘domestic violent extremism’ even if the cases do not meet the criteria for such a classification. Given the narrative pushed by the Biden administration that domestic violent extremism is the ‘greatest threat’ facing our country, revelation that the FBI may be artificially padding domestic terrorism data is scandalous,” Jordan said in a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray.
“We have received accusations that FBI agents are bolstering the number of cases of DVEs to satisfy their superiors. For example, one whistleblower explained that because agents are not finding enough DVE cases, they are encouraged and incentivized to reclassify cases as DVE cases even though there is minimal, circumstantial evidence to support the reclassification,” he continued.
