An iconic American institution has declared another champion, and this one’s especially historic.
In case you’re unfamiliar with New Hampshire’s Miss Greater Derry beauty pageant — officially known as the Miss Greater Derry Scholarship Program — here’s an explainer from MissDerry.org:
The Miss Derry Scholarship Program was created in 1986 as a community service project and incorporated in 1996 (*dba Miss Greater Derry). It’s success has been greater than we imagined. In 2000 we awarded over $16,000 in scholarships, making us the 3rd highest awarding local pageant in the United States. In 2003 we awarded $28,450.00. … Since our inception, we have awarded $328,310.00 in scholarships.
Our board of directors and membership consists of volunteers who donate their time and resources to furthering our mission.
“The Miss Greater Derry Scholarship Pageant,” the site points out, “is a preliminary event to the Miss NH and Miss America Pageant.”
As reported by South Carolina’s WPDE, the pageant welcomed a unique contestant this year: 19-year-old biological male Brían Nguyen. Brían went head-to-head with females in the areas of — per Miss Greater Derry — “scholastic aptitude, talent, character, community service and poise.” And in the end, entrants with uteruses were no match for the prostate-possessing person.

On Instagram, Brían wrote of honor:
“In the 100-year history of Miss America, I have officially become the FIRST transgender titleholder within the Miss America Organization. No words can describe the feeling of having the opportunity to serve my community and represent my community for the very first time at Miss New Hampshire. I am so honored to be crowned your new Miss Greater Derry 2023, and I am thrilled to show you all what I have up my sleeves. This will be an amazing year.”

As you’re aware, the arena of women has historically been occupied by females. But recent social progress has flipped the script:
Back to Brían, 2022’s Miss Greater Derry provides some personal information online. The model aims to be an entrepreneur:
“I am currently a freshman at Nashua Community College majoring in Business Management. I hope to use my degree so that I can create sustainable, ethical, and inclusive products such as clothing, cosmetics, and accessories. I also hope to continue to grow my career in the modeling and social media industry.
“My Social Impact Initiative is #QueensAreEverywhere. This is a media movement that helps the next generation develop self-confidence, realize their potential, and become the leaders of their destiny. This is done by spotlighting members of the community that have faced adversity and teach how they overcame it. I am excited to continue growing this project and expanding it into in-person events and appearances.”
As noted above, the Miss Greater Derry contest feeds Miss America. Might the national pageant someday see a biologically male queen? If our current trajectory continues, it seems virtually guaranteed.
