The National Republican Congressional Committee reported a record-breaking haul for the month of May, outpacing its Democratic counterpart for the first time this year as GOP groups continue to benefit from former President Donald Trump’s conviction in New York.

The NRCC raised $12.6 million last month, marking the most money the committee has raised in the month of May during an election year. The record comes after the NRCC raised more than $1 million from small-dollar donors in the days following Trump’s guilty verdict in his hush-money trial in New York last month.

The latest report brings the NRCC to a total of $147.4 million raised so far this cycle, roughly $9.5 million more than the previous presidential cycle. The record-breaking haul leaves the NRCC with $64.6 million cash on hand, closing the gap between its Democratic counterparts.

“Growing the majority is a team effort, and we smashed this fundraising record with the help of everyday Americans and our incredible leadership team,” NRCC Chairman Richard Hudson said in a statement. “Families don’t feel physically or financially secure with extreme Democrats running the country; they’re opening up their wallets to ensure there is no chance Democrats continue to wreak havoc on their daily lives next year.”

Meanwhile, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee raised $11.9 million during the month of May, about $732 thousand less than the NRCC. However, the group still holds an advantage over the NRCC after raising $191 million so far this cycle, with $78.8 million cash on hand heading into June.

The significant haul for the NRCC comes as Trump and other Republican groups have reported massive fundraising numbers for the month of May, which could help the former president close the gap with President Joe Biden as the November election nears.

Trump and the Republican National Committee raised $141 million in May, spurred in part by his criminal conviction in New York last week. That haul is roughly the same as what Biden and the Democratic Party raised in March and April combined.

The Biden campaign has not yet released its May fundraising numbers.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said his fundraising platforms had also brought in record-high figures following Trump’s conviction, arguing it has sparked “backlash” among voters who view the verdict as politically motivated.

“The American people see President Trump’s trial for what it is: partisan lawfare against a political opponent,” Johnson told the Washington Examiner. “That’s why, like President Trump’s campaign, our online fundraising efforts supporting the president also broke records following the verdict. House Republicans are on track to raise the resources we will need to grow our majority and help send President Trump back to the White House.”

Still, House Democrats have largely led the charge in fundraising, with the DCCC consistently outraising the NRCC for most months throughout the 2024 cycle. That could give the party a boost as they seek to win back the House majority next year.

Biden, for his part, has repeatedly seized on Trump’s “disturbing” conviction during campaign events as a weapon against the former president.
