A fundraiser aiming to throw a “rager” for the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, fraternity brothers who protected the American flag from pro-Palestinian protesters has raised tens of thousands of dollars.

The effort was launched on Wednesday morning and has already raised over $65,000. The members of UNC’s Pi Kappa Phi fraternity protected the U.S. flag after it was replaced by the Palestinian flag by protesters and intervened when the protesters were “preparing to destroy it,” according to Guillermo Estrada, one of the students who helped protect the flag.

Estrada posted on X that while he is not fully educated on the conflict between Israel and Hamas, he was “immediately upset” that the Palestinian protesters had disrespected his country’s flag “in order to advocate for another.” As such, he and a fellow fraternity brother, along with several other men, prevented the flag from falling on the ground and did so for an hour despite the protesters throwing rocks, sticks, and other items at them.

“My parents started a new life in the United States, a country that has helped them flourish and raise two kids,” Estrada posted. “I grew up in a Military community and saw first hand the sacrifices they make. I will not stand for the disrespect these ‘protestors’ cause for the sake of another country.”

The fundraiser page noted that the men from UNC’s Pi Kappa Phi who protected the flag “gave the best to America and now they deserve the best.”

UNC is one of many colleges that have seen rampant pro-Palestinian protests on campus, many of which include campers and some becoming violent on campus. At Columbia University, New York Police Department riot police officers stormed the school’s Hamilton Hall, which had been occupied and barricaded by protesting students.

Former President Donald Trump has asked President Joe Biden to speak out against the violence and antisemitism happening across college campuses. The move by Trump, who is running for president again this year, mirrors a statement Biden made in 2020 when he criticized Trump’s handling of the Black Lives Matter protests and riots that occurred at the time.
