Washington Examiner senior columnist Salena Zito lamented that people are “unwilling” to be like Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA), who has a “buffet” of opinions.

Zito appeared on the Hugh Hewitt Show on Wednesday to discuss her recent interview with Fetterman. Host Hugh Hewitt asked her what the term “Fetterman Republican” means.

“It means that you are being reasonable and being able to unpack what you see happening on both sides,” Zito said. “[Fetterman] has an ability to step back and say, ‘Okay, this is why this is happening. This is why this is happening. And I agree with this and agree with a part of that.’”

“We’ve been unwilling to be that way, since the 2008 presidential election, and where that ability, along with that historic election, along with the advent of Twitter, has made it impossible to have a buffet of points of view and be able to get away with that without being attacked,” she continued.

Fetterman has often broken with his party since he won his Senate seat in 2022. Pennsylvania is one of four states that have a split delegation, meaning one senator from each party represents the state.

Over the past year, Fetterman has defended Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu while his colleagues in the Senate accused the prime minister of war crimes and genocide. Fetterman also called out his colleagues for disagreeing with the capture of former Venezuelan dictator Nicholas Maduro.

Still, Fetterman’s stances have come with consequences as the Pennsylvania Working Families Party promised to primary Fetterman in 2028.
