Chinese immigrant Kelly Wong became the first noncitizen appointed to California‘s San Francisco Elections Commission last week, and the decision has received criticism.
The Hong Kong immigrant came to the United States in 2019, and a year later, San Francisco voters passed a measure to remove the citizenship requirement to serve on city boards and advisory bodies.
The Board of Supervisors in San Francisco unanimously voted Wong into her position. She has said she hopes to use her position to inform more immigrants about the voting process.
California attorney Laura Powell criticized the move to appoint anyone, regardless of immigration status to, public office.
“In case there was any doubt, the bill’s sponsor said it was meant to include undocumented immigrants. There was no opposition to SB225. We were all asleep at the wheel when this passed and share some blame,” she said.
“California has no rules, apparently,” one person said on social media.
The satire website Babylon Bee chimed in on the controversy over the noncitizen appointed to the commission.
“President Xi Appointed To Serve On San Francisco Elections Commission,” its latest headline said.
