Massachusetts Republicans voted to remove the general chairman of the Republican National Convention on Saturday in an upset at a state committee meeting near Boston.
Former Republican National Committee Treasurer Ron Kaufman was removed from his position as a national committeeman and replaced by Brad Wyatt in a 37-35 vote, according to Politico.
The stunning vote meant the ousting of a GOP power player, who had spent decades working between Washington, D.C., and Massachusetts. Kaufman has worked for former President George H.W. Bush and advised former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney on his campaign.
Kaufman also served as the RNC’s treasurer but decided not to seek reelection in 2022. Although he has been removed by state Republicans as a national committeeman, he will still be the chairman of the 2028 Republican National Convention in Houston.

The former RNC treasurer’s ousting also hurt state party chairwoman Amy Carnevale, who survived her own vote on Saturday. Carnevale is a pro-Donald Trump conservative who helped change the state’s delegate selection rules to favor Trump in the 2024 GOP presidential primary.
Kaufman will remain in his post as a committeeman until the Republican National Convention in July in Milwaukee.
