The Washington Examiner’s Samantha-Jo Roth stated Sunday that 2024 presidential candidate Nikki Haley has the potential to capitalize on independent voters in New Hampshire as the state’s primary election is only days away.
Roth, a congressional and campaign reporter, noted that Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, has focused on the Republican Party’s failures to win past elections as part of her argument that a new candidate is needed for the GOP.
“These are all lines of things she is saying, and we’ve seen her go after former President Trump a little bit more in the last couple of days than we have seen throughout this entire cycle,” Roth said on Fox News Live.
Roth noted, however, that Haley has avoided discussing Trump directly in her speeches and seems instead to be using Gov. Chris Sununu (R-NH) as her “attack dog” to talk about the former president. She also stated that Haley’s campaign has avoided directly answering questions from voters.
“Has that been working for her? Perhaps,” Roth said. “But we will see in the next couple of days if that strategy is going to change or not. She does have an opportunity to counter some of this really strong excitement and enthusiasm from the Republican electorate with these independent voters in the state of New Hampshire that we know are so critical to the states’s makeup.”

The New Hampshire primary will be held on Tuesday and will come a little more than a week after Trump dominated the Iowa caucuses, earning 51% of the vote from caucusgoers. Just ahead of the Granite State’s primary, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) announced the suspension of his 2024 presidential campaign and endorsed Trump.
Polling data from Jan. 16-19 has shown Trump with a double-digit percentage point lead over Haley at 11%. In total, Trump had 50% of support from the poll, ahead of Haley’s 39%.
