Sources in direct contact with Asma’s British family told the Telegraph on Wednesday that the former first lady is so sick she often “can’t be in the same room” with others and is believed to have a 50-50 chance of survival.

Her father, Fawaz Akhras, has been caring for her at the Assad family’s accommodations in Moscow and is “heartbroken” over the possibly fatal return of the illness, according to reports.

Asma was diagnosed with leukemia in May of this year. She previously struggled after being diagnosed with breast cancer but declared she was cancer-free in 2019.

The Assad family has been living in Russia under the protection of President Vladimir Putin since the collapse of its regime at the beginning of December.

The former Syrian president has kept a low profile, staying away from the public and releasing a short statement days after his country was overtaken by rebel forces.

The reported downturn in her health may explain the recent rumors of a split between Bashar and Asma.

Turkish and Arabic media began reporting last week that Asma is seeking a divorce and intends to return to the United Kingdom, where she retains citizenship.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that such rumors “do not correspond to reality.”

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated that Asma would not be allowed to return to the U.K. for any reason.

“I want it confirmed that she’s a sanctioned individual and is not welcome here in the U.K.,” Lammy said.
