Washington Examiner Executive Editor Bob Cusack said Democratic leaders are resisting voter ID laws despite broad public support, arguing they recognize the political risk, particularly as debate intensifies over the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act.

“I think it’s really because the Democratic base — a lot of Democrats, and I’ve talked to a few of them — they know this is a losing issue for them,” Cusack said on the Trinity Broadcasting Network. “And Democrats privately know that’s not a winning issue.”

Cusack described voter ID as a “common-sense initiative,” noting how routine identification requirements are already in daily life.

“We’re so used to giving our driver’s license — whether you’re buying a beer or going on an airplane — it’s become part of our lives,” he said. “This is a common-sense initiative that Democrats know they’re on the losing side of.”

The revised SAVE America Act would require proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote, a measure Republicans say ensures only eligible citizens vote. Critics argue the proposal could create hurdles for some lawful voters who lack immediate access to documentation.

Cusack emphasized how razor-thin margins in Congress heighten the stakes.

“With a margin in the House so close, it could literally come down to hundreds of votes deciding who runs the House,” he said. “That’s a big deal. You’ve got to make sure there’s voter integrity, and obviously Republicans are pushing — you’ve got to identify yourself before you vote.”

Even as Democratic leaders opposed the legislation, Cusack suggested they understand the political terrain.

“Even though they’re blocking it, it’s a big issue — and a winning issue for the GOP,” Cusack said.
