Former President Donald Trump‘s chances of becoming president again appear favorable, as he holds a commanding lead to become the GOP nominee and beats President Joe Biden in a recently released poll.

Trump currently leads the polling for GOP’s presidential primary race at 55%, followed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis at 20%, former Vice President Mike Pence at 7%, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley at 4%, and business entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy at 2%. Trump also was far ahead of the competition when pitted against just one opponent, earning roughly three times the support when competing against Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), Pence, and Haley, and beating DeSantis with 61% support against the Florida governor’s 39%, according to the poll from Harvard-Harris.

REPUBLICANS CARE MORE ABOUT ENDING ‘WOKE’ POLICIES THAN PRESERVING MEDICARE: POLL

Trump also beat both Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in a hypothetical election when asked if the election were held today. The former president beat Biden by 5%, while Harris lost to Trump by 10%.

Biden’s hypothetical loss comes as most people asked in the poll, at 56%, believe he is not mentally fit to serve as president, with 67% believing he is too old for the position. When asked if Biden will win the 2024 Democratic primary, only 47% said they believe he will win, compared to 53% saying he will lose.

Trump boasted about the recent polling on social media, claiming he is beating Biden “everywhere” except in a recent poll by the Wall Street Journal. The poll found that about 55% of voters said they care more about eliminating “woke ideologies” in schools and businesses than just 27% who care more about protecting Social Security and Medicare benefits from budget cuts.

“In the Polls, I am beating Biden everywhere, by a lot, except in the Globalist inspired Wall Street Journal, one of the worst, and most partisan, media outlets anywhere,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “It was that way with them in 2016, until I beat Crooked Hillary. Now they are using the same Fake Playbook, that I beat Ron DeSanctimonious easily, but Biden is close. All other media outlets have me beating both by a lot. Don’t buy their Bull…. They are FAKE NEWS!!!”

Though these numbers are favorable for Trump, the poll was not entirely good news for the former president, as just over half of voters, at 51%, believe he will win the GOP nomination in 2024. DeSantis, seen by most as Trump’s biggest 2024 rival despite not announcing his candidacy yet, is seen as the most likely candidate to beat Trump in the GOP primary, followed by Pence and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX).

Beyond the GOP nomination, most people in the poll said they do not believe either Trump or Biden should be president again. A total of 63% of respondents said Biden should not seek a second term as president, while 55% said Trump should not seek a second term either.

Respondents were also asked if voters need another choice beyond Biden and Trump in 2024, with 65% saying yes. Additionally, 51% said they would support a moderate, independent candidate for the 2024 election rather than Trump or Biden should the two be pitted against each other in the next presidential election.

Like Trump, DeSantis would also beat both Biden and Harris in the hypothetical scenario where the next presidential election was held immediately, though his lead is not nearly as big as Trump’s. The Florida governor beat Biden by 3%, while DeSantis beat Harris with a lead of 2%.

This poll was conducted online in the United States from April 18-19. A total of 1,845 registered voters were questioned by The Harris Poll and HarrisX in this poll.
