“This is one of the most complete skulls ever found,” Sotheby’s Senior Vice President Cassandra Hatton said, noting that it is around 70% complete. “It ranks in the top 10-12 skulls period; of the dozen that are in museum collections, this ranks amongst them.”

The skull stands at 6 feet, 7 inches tall, and weighs more than 200 pounds.

The T. rex skull was found in Harding County, South Dakota, and was excavated between 2020 and 2021. Hatton said that the rest of the skeleton has not been found, noting that the dig site was weathered and most of the skeleton had eroded.
