A San Antonio International Airport employee has died after being sucked into a Delta Airlines plane engine Friday.
The plane had just finished a flight from Los Angeles and was taxiing at the time of the incident. Ground handling operations company Unifi Aviation was the anonymous worker’s employer and reported the death was “unrelated to Unifi’s operational processes, safety procedures and policies” in a statement issued Saturday.

“Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased, and we remain focused on supporting our employees on the ground and ensuring they are being taken care of during this time,” Unifi’s statement read. “Out of respect for the deceased, we will not be sharing any additional information. While police and other officials continue to investigate this incident, we defer to them on providing further details.”
The airport also confirmed that an investigation is ongoing. In a statement, the airport said: “We are deeply saddened by this incident and are working with authorities as they begin their investigation.”
A source cited by the Guardian on the condition of anonymity claimed that the employee “intentionally stepped in front of the live engine.”

Delta Airlines issued a statement of its own Sunday to express, “Our hearts and full support are with their family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time.”
San Antonio International Airport was named Airport of the Year in 2022 by the Airport Minority Advisory Council, as it hired and promoted over 100 employees in 2021, a majority of whom are minorities.
