Anne Heche’s oldest son, Homer Laffoon, said the past several days have held “unbelievable emotional swings” as the actress’s condition declined following a fiery car crash.
On Aug. 5, Heche crashed into a home in Mar Vista, California, causing both the house and the car to catch on fire. Heche was transported to a hospital for treatment but later was declared brain-dead at 53 years old.
“My brother Atlas and I lost our Mom,” Laffoon, 20, told People. “After six days of almost unbelievable emotional swings, I am left with a deep, wordless sadness. Hopefully my mom is free from pain and beginning to explore what I like to imagine as her eternal freedom.”

Heche shared Laffoon with former husband, Coley Laffoon, and Atlas, 13, with ex-husband James Tupper.
Laffoon said he was grateful for the support many have offered him.
“Over those six days, thousands of friends, family, and fans made their hearts known to me,” Laffoon said. “I am grateful for their love, as I am for the support of my Dad, Coley, and my stepmom Alexi, who continue to be my rock during this time.
A family representative revealed that Heche suffered a “severe anoxic brain injury” leading to her death.
