Midfielder for Atlanta United Santiago Sosa has been suspended for three games after using a homophobic slur during a game.

Sosa, 23, is also paying an undisclosed fine and will be required to attend LGBTQ+ Allyship training through Athlete Ally for the offense that occurred on Oct. 1.

“Atlanta United is aware of Santiago Sosa’s use of offensive language during last week’s match. The club does not condone the use of harmful or disrespectful language towards any person.” Atlanta United said in a statement. “Santiago is extremely remorseful and personally apologized to the New England Revolution player. He has also requested additional resources from Major League Soccer’s Players Association to grow from this incident.”

As a result, Sosa won’t attend final game of the MLS regular season at home against New York City FC on Sunday, plus the first two games of the 2023 season.
