One auto expert is warning that “it’s going to take decades” before there are enough resources available to sustain the auto industry’s electric vehicle push.
Toyota Motor Corp’s top scientist warned Thursday there are not enough resources to focus on battery-electric vehicles solely, according to a report.

Gill Pratt, chief executive of the Toyota Research Institute, told reporters hybrids were a much more realistic option.
“Battery materials and renewable charging infrastructure will eventually be plentiful,” Pratt said. “But it’s going to take decades for battery material mines, renewable power generation, transmission lines, and seasonal energy-storage facilities to scale up.”
Pratt suggested countries such as Norway could make a quicker move toward more fully utilizing battery-electric vehicles.

Toyota has been criticized for being slow to jump on board with the push toward battery-electric vehicles.
On Thursday, Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda called battery-electric vehicles “one very important option” in continued support of hybrid vehicles.
