According to Mattel Films head Robbie Brenner, the film script by Dunham is “great,” and he believes the film will be “an amazing collaboration.”

Dunham’s love of the iconic pocket-sized toy is said to have provided her with “countless hours of childhood escapism.”

While the Polly Pocket film was announced in 2021, it is reported that the script for the film is now complete, and production for the film is building momentum following the box office success of Barbie.

Polly Pocket dolls first took off in the 1980s in the United Kingdom, and when Mattel bought the brand, the pocket-size dollhouse spread in popularity over the decades.

Mattel’s Barbie movie dominated the box office in its opening weekend with $162 million, beating this year’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie at $146 million.

While Barbie has been a box office success, it did receive mixed reviews over director Greta Gerwig’s messaging on feminism and “patriarchy” in the film.

Billionaire tech executive Elon Musk wrote on social media on Monday, “If you take a shot every time Barbie says the word ‘patriarchy’, you will pass out before the movie ends.”

Fans of Polly Pocket will have to wait to see if Dunham, who has been open about her feminist views and politics, will produce a similar doll movie like Gerwig or whether it will celebrate the iconic child toy.
