Former Attorney General William Barr criticized former President Donald Trump’s claim that the Department of Justice investigation into his alleged mishandling of classified documents is a “witch hunt.”

In an interview with CBS News, Barr praised the conduct of the DOJ, laying all of the blame on Trump for the case. Barr argued that his former boss could have solved the issue easily but brought trouble for himself after he “jerked them around.”

“Over time, people will see that this is not a case of the Department of Justice conducting a witch hunt,” Barr said. “In fact, they approached this very delicately and with deference to the president, and this would have gone nowhere had the president just returned the documents. But he jerked them around for a year and a half.”

Once a close ally of Trump, Barr has since become a consistent critic, frequently criticizing him in media appearances. Last month, he said that he wouldn’t support Trump for the 2024 nomination.

“He does not have the discipline. He does not have the ability for strategic thinking and linear thinking, or setting priorities or how to get things done in the system,” Barr said last month when asked if Trump was fit to be president. “It is a horror show when he’s left to his own devices. You may want his policies but Trump will not deliver Trump policies. He will deliver chaos.”

Trump has responded in kind, frequently deriding Barr’s performance and record publicly. Last month, he quipped that it was “An honor to have fired him!”
