A man who fell to his death from the 18th floor of a New York City skyscraper was identified by police as Bed Bath & Beyond’s chief financial officer.

Gustavo Arnal, a 52-year-old who was also an executive vice president of the company, fell from what is known as “Jenga Tower” on Leonard Street in Manhattan on Friday, the New York City Police Department confirmed to Business Insider.

His death came just two days after an announcement from the struggling retail company that it would close 150 stores and commence mass layoffs in light of plummeting sales.

Just a few weeks prior to his death, filings showed Arnal sold 42,513 shares of Bed Bath & Beyond stock for a value of over $1 million, according to MarketBeat.com. He had been with the company since 2020.

Bed Bath & Beyond expressed sorrow over the loss of Arnal.
