The administration will also invest $600 million into boosting test manufacturing, Axios reported. The move comes as cases are on the rise, leading to worries about another major outbreak. Households will be able to request a free test starting Sept. 25.

“These critical investments will strengthen our nation’s production levels of domestic at-home COVID-19 rapid tests and help mitigate the spread of the virus,” Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra said in a statement obtained by the Washington Post.

Free at-home tests had stopped being mailed out for free in June. Roughly 755 million tests were mailed out in the first four rounds, according to federal officials.

The revival of the program is likely to boost Republican fears that renewed COVID-19 lockdown restrictions are inbound.

Private insurers were previously required to cover eight at-home tests per month, but the expiration of the public health emergency in May ended the requirement.
