President Joe Biden’s approval rating is at an all time low as the war in Israel and Gaza and foreign policy weigh on the minds of voters a year out from the 2024 election.
Criticism of Biden’s foreign policy decisions and handling of the war in Israel comes after the United States hosted the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference in San Francisco last week.

An NBC News poll released Sunday put Biden’s approval rating at 40% as of Nov. 1. That’s down from 46% on Jan. 1, and it’s a point lower than his previous low of 41% in March of 2022.
The new poll comes as the president faces challenges in the Middle East and receives criticism at home for calling Chinese President Xi Jinping a dictator after meeting with him on the sidelines of the summit in California last week.
Biden’s highly-anticipated meeting with the Chinese leader resulted in the restarting of military-to-military communication between the countries. The two leaders also discussed curbing the spread of fentanyl.
The seemingly-fruitful meeting was overshadowed by Biden’s comment afterward regarding Xi.
“He’s a dictator in the sense that he’s a guy who runs a country that is a communist country that’s based on a form of government totally different than ours,” Biden told reporters.
Another prominent focus of the Biden administration has been the war in Israel. The situation overseas has captured the interest of the American public. People are advocating a range of reactions to the situation by leaders in the U.S., and tensions regarding the situation are high.
Biden has largely expressed support for Israel while appearing to try and toe a diplomatic line. He has emphasized Israel’s right to defend itself after the Oct. 7 attack by U.S.-designated terror group Hamas militants, and he has shown some concern for the safety of civilians living in Gaza.
The attack on Israel resulted in about 1,400 deaths and the capture of hundreds of people. In the ensuing war, Palestinian health authorities in the Hamas-controlled enclave have put the death count in Gaza at 11,470, according to the Associated Press. U.S. officials have cast doubt on that figure.

The NBC News poll included another possibly-perturbing number for Biden on Sunday.
It had Biden trailing Trump in a hypothetical 2024 match up. Though Trump’s lead was within the poll’s margin of error, Trump led Biden 46% to 44% among registered voters.
