President Joe Biden reportedly instructed the Democratic National Committee to pony up $18 million to boost his party’s House and Senate campaigns just two weeks before the midterm elections as Republicans hope to win control of one or both chambers of Congress.

Ten million dollars were directed to be given to House and Senate Democratic campaign arms immediately, and another $8 million was added as a commitment through fundraising efforts, according to CNN, citing a Democratic official.

The last-ditch cash infusion is being reported as Republicans hope to snag victories in key contests in states such as Pennsylvania and Georgia, and one net gain would give them back power over the Senate. When it comes to the House, Republicans are heavy favorites. The GOP has an 81% chance of winning control of the House, according to election forecaster FiveThirtyEight.

“The polls have been all over the place,” Biden said at the DNC headquarters on Monday. “Republicans ahead. Democrats ahead. Republicans ahead. But it’s going to close, I think, with seeing one more shift: Democrats ahead in the closing days.”

Historically, the president’s party typically loses ground in the House and Senate in the midterm elections. Democrats saw a surge in support over the summer after the Supreme Court’s ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade, and they have pushed democracy as an issue on the ballot as investigations into the Capitol riot continue. However, in recent weeks, Republicans appear to be resurgent as it becomes clear that issues such as high inflation and crime have risen as top priorities for voters.

The money targeted by Biden brings the total funds transferred to the House and Senate campaign committees to a record-breaking $27 million, which is nearly double the previous record of $13.9 million in 2010, CNN reported.
